Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark – Review

Review by Nabeko:

The World of Spider-Man

I saw the performance on May 24. I’ve also seen Phantom of the Opera, Sister Act, and Chicago, but this one felt the most modern. Each show has its own unique world, but Spider-Man stood out with its wire stunts and cutting-edge technology that kept my eyes glued to the stage.

As others have mentioned, there were some technical issues in the early days, but it seems the producers changed, and when I saw it, the show was highly polished. The singing, dancing, and storyline were all excellent! If you saw it before and felt disappointed, I think you would be satisfied now.

Review by T & M:

Impressive Aerial Action

We went to see the show on December 28 and got seats in the very front row of the mezzanine, which turned out to be the best spot. For the wide-ranging wire stunts, the front of the second level really is the best vantage point. Definitely worth experiencing the thrilling aerial action!

As for the songs and direction, I felt they could have been a bit simpler and more emotionally resonant. Afterward, it seemed like the wire stunts were the only thing that truly stayed with me, which might be an issue. That said, Reeve Carney was fantastic and his unique voice suited the show perfectly.

And yes, the “usual” technical trouble happened during my show too. It was only a brief pause, but the audience reacted with applause as if they were expecting it! That kind of unpredictability seems to be part of the fun of American entertainment. All in all, it’s a show worth seeing at least once.

Review by Oike:

Technical Issues as Part of the Experience?

The attempt to recreate the comic book world on stage was bold, and it was clear that a great deal of money had been invested.

That said, everything felt a little unfinished. The dancing in Act One was fine, but the singing was weak overall. If the tickets were cheaper, it might be worth seeing for the novelty, but at this price it felt disappointing.

Act One follows the familiar movie storyline, so it is easy to understand, but Act Two becomes completely confusing. They also relied too heavily on digital projections, which ended up diminishing the sense of stage magic. People around me were also complaining about how poorly Act Two worked.

As expected, technical trouble appeared on the fifth night as well, resulting in a five minute pause. Ironically, Spider Man’s improvised pantomime to fill the delay was the most entertaining moment of the evening.

Children younger than elementary school age might enjoy it, but personally, I would not see it again even for free. To be honest, it does not feel like a show designed for a long run, so if you are curious, now is the time to go. (lol)

Review by Popeye’s Son:

Thoughts on Spider-Man

Honestly, some aspects may be hard for die-hard fans to accept. After hearing about the disastrous first night in the news, I went out of curiosity.

If the show somehow runs for a few years, it might be better to wait for discount tickets later. My father, who went with me, wasn’t impressed either.

Luckily, we had tickets for Chicago as well, which made up for it.
