A Wonderful World – Story
The Plot / Summary of A Wonderful World: The Louis Armstrong Musical
This musical unfolds through the perspectives of Armstrong’s four wives, highlighting not only his groundbreaking achievements and international fame but also the complexities of his personal life and relationships.
His first wife, Daisy, married Armstrong in the early 1920s. Though they lived in poverty, she was a source of strength during the years when he was shaping his early jazz style. The strain of financial hardship and the pressures of his rising career ultimately led to their divorce.
His second wife, Lil, a pianist he met in Chicago, married Armstrong in 1928. She played a key role in his artistic growth, guiding him as he gained recognition in Chicago’s jazz scene and encouraging him to step forward as a solo artist.
His third wife, Alpha, was with him during the height of his fame. Their marriage coincided with his peak success and the maturation of his musical style. However, the demands of his career and lifestyle gradually created distance between them.
His final wife, Lucille, a former Cotton Club dancer and singer, is remembered as Armstrong’s true life partner. She supported him through his later years as he became not only a global musical icon but also a respected public figure. Known affectionately as “Mrs. Satchmo,” she stood by his side as he expanded his influence beyond music.
Throughout the show, audiences will hear Armstrong’s signature songs such as “What a Wonderful World” and “When You’re Smiling.” The musical is structured in four chapters, each reflecting one of his marriages, blending iconic music with intimate personal moments. This unique approach reveals the human side of Armstrong behind his extraordinary success.
Key Highlights of Louis Armstrong’s Life
To fully appreciate the Broadway musical A Wonderful World, it helps to know the story of its central figure, Louis Armstrong. Below is a quick overview of his remarkable journey.
Who was he?
Louis Armstrong (August 4, 1901 – July 6, 1971) was an American trumpeter, vocalist, and bandleader who became one of the most influential figures in 20th-century music. Widely regarded as the face of jazz, his groundbreaking style, charisma, and humanity left a lasting mark not only on jazz but on entertainment worldwide. His story reflects both the struggles of growing up in poverty in New Orleans and the triumph of using music as a powerful tool for innovation, resilience, and social impact.
New Orleans Years
・Early life and birthplace
Armstrong was born in 1901 in New Orleans, Louisiana, and grew up in a poor family. New Orleans, known as the birthplace of jazz, was rich in cultural diversity. Congo Square, where enslaved people once gathered on Sundays to dance and share music, became a symbol of African American cultural roots. A scene reminiscent of this tradition appears in the musical.
・First encounter with music
At age 12, Armstrong was sent to a reform school after firing a pistol. It was there that he first picked up a trumpet, a life-changing moment that set him on the path to music. He later received a silver trumpet of his own and began honing his craft by playing on the streets of New Orleans.
・The start of his career
He gained experience playing with local bands, most notably under the mentorship of King Oliver, who recognized his talent and invited him to Chicago in 1922.
Chicago Years
・Rise to fame
In the 1920s, Armstrong joined King Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band in Chicago, where his exceptional trumpet skills drew widespread attention. Soon, he began recording with his own groups, creating landmark jazz recordings that shaped the future of the genre.
National Stardom
・Peak career
Beyond trumpet playing, Armstrong captivated audiences with his unique scat singing (wordless vocal improvisation). His groundbreaking style made him a household name.
・Reaching the masses
By the 1930s, Armstrong’s fame had spread through radio, film, and international tours. His warm personality and humor made him beloved beyond the jazz scene. He created timeless hits including “What a Wonderful World,” “Hello, Dolly!,” and “When the Saints Go Marching In.”
・About “What a Wonderful World”
The title song of the musical is also Armstrong’s most iconic recording. Released during the Vietnam War and the civil rights movement, it reflects themes of hope, gratitude, and appreciation of everyday beauty, from blue skies and blooming flowers to the bonds between people. Armstrong’s soulful voice turned it into a universal anthem of peace and optimism.
Later Years
・Global popularity
With his fourth wife, Lucille, at his side, Armstrong continued touring internationally through the 1960s, remaining an active performer until his final years.
・Black identity and legacy
Armstrong rose to prominence during an era of racial segregation. Songs like “When You’re Smiling” highlight how he used music and his charisma to transcend cultural barriers, paving the way for future generations of Black artists.
・Personal life
The musical briefly references Armstrong’s rumored illegitimate daughter, Sharon Preston-Folta, born from his relationship with a Cotton Club dancer. While he quietly supported her and her mother financially, this part of his life was not public knowledge during his lifetime.
・Final years
Armstrong performed until the very end of his life, passing away from a heart attack in Queens, New York, in 1971.
Louis Armstrong’s Legacy
Louis Armstrong was more than a jazz pioneer, he was a symbol of joy, resilience, and hope. His innovative trumpet style, unforgettable voice, and humanity continue to inspire musicians and audiences worldwide. His legacy transcends music and remains timeless.

The history of jazz music in America cannot be considered separately from difficult topics such as racism. It was a very deep and informative read.
The powerful singing voices of the cast of black people (can I call them so...? it's difficult in America these days) were truly amazing. I was in the second floor seats, but I got goosebumps. It was very moving to be exposed to the beauty of jazz music. I want to see it again.
The theater was close to my hotel, and with a recommendation from a Broadway staff member, I rushed in and bought "Wonderful World." In conclusion, I was so moved I've never been more moved.
I've only vaguely heard jazz since I was a child, but it surprisingly became a part of me. It must be the power of jazz... The sound was great, and it felt like the sounds of the 1920s were reviving throughout the theater. The actors' skills were superb, and the singing and dancing were truly impressive...
I'm so satisfied to have experienced the history of American music with my eyes and ears. I'm so grateful that you recommended such a wonderful production.
I really wanted to show this to my father, who loves good old American music. I hope it's a production that will continue for a long time. Thank you so much.

Behind the Scenes of A Wonderful World: The Louis Armstrong Musical
Incredible attention to detail in recreating the Jazz Age
Have you ever heard of the banjo? This string instrument, with its round body, originated in 17th-century America. It was created by enslaved Africans in the South and became central to African American music, later finding its place in jazz and shaping the sound of Black music. The banjo makes a special appearance in A Wonderful World, bringing audiences the rare chance to hear authentic sounds of the era.The production also features professional tap dancer DeWitt Fleming Jr., whose breathtaking performance electrifies the stage. Even those unfamiliar with tap will be amazed, as the audience often responds with enthusiastic cheers.
Japanese sound designer Hiro Iida on the creative team
Every Broadway show relies on an electronic music designer to craft its unique soundscape. For A Wonderful World, that role is filled by Hiro Iida, a Japanese sound designer with extraordinary talent. Known for his work on MJ, Mean Girls, and The Great Gatsby, Iida has earned recognition from none other than Andrew Lloyd Webber himself for his detailed and innovative sound design. For this musical, Iida focused on recreating the authentic atmosphere of the Jazz Age. By using period-specific instruments and deliberately incorporating the slightly “rough edges” of early jazz, he ensures the music stays true to Louis Armstrong’s era. With guidance from New Orleans music experts, the production delivers an immersive and historically faithful sound.
