Gettin’ the Band Back Together – About the Show
Highlights of Gettin’ the Band Back Together – Must-See Moments
An Interactive Comedy Musical with a Live Concert Feel
Unlike most Broadway musicals where the action stays on stage, this show breaks the mold. The cast frequently moves through the orchestra aisles, chatting, joking, and even interacting directly with the audience. It feels less like a traditional musical and more like a high-energy live concert where everyone joins the fun.To top it off, the cast members perform live with real instruments, creating powerful onstage music that guarantees the crowd will be on their feet.
Playful References to Other Broadway Hits
One of the most entertaining aspects of this musical is its playful nods to other famous shows. You might catch a character dressed as Evan from Dear Evan Hansen, hear a hilarious parody of a Les Miserables anthem, or see a cheeky tribute to Chicago. There is even a dance sequence inspired by Michael Jackson’s Thriller. These clever Easter eggs bring an extra layer of fun, keeping the audience smiling throughout.
Sit on the Aisle for High-Fives with the Cast
During the show, performers enter and exit through the orchestra aisles, but they do more than just walk past. They might hand you a flyer for their “band,” stop to chat, or reach out for a high-five. The audience is pulled right into the story, making it feel like you’re part of the band itself. Few Broadway shows offer this level of interaction, so if you want the full experience, grab an aisle seat and immerse yourself in the world of Gettin’ the Band Back Together.

Gettin’ the Band Back Together – Story
The Plot / Summary of Gettin’ the Band Back Together
Soon Mitch reconnects with his old high school bandmate, Bart. While catching up, Mitch admits how badly his life has turned out, only to learn that Bart isn’t much better off; he has become a schoolteacher, stuck teaching math he despises. The two middle-aged friends reminisce about the past and joke about how fun it would be to start a band again. Bart seriously suggests giving it another try, but Mitch shuts the idea down right away, leaving Bart to return to his daily grind at school.
As Mitch struggles to find a new job, he learns his mother Sharon has fallen behind on mortgage payments for their home, which she has been trying to manage while running her small piano school. To make matters worse, their old high school rival Tygen resurfaces. Now a wealthy real estate developer and lead singer of a successful band called “Mouthfeel,” Tygen has never forgotten losing a trophy to Mitch in a high school competition. Out of spite, he seizes Mitch’s family home and even sets his sights on Bart’s house.
The blow becomes even harsher when Mitch reunites with his former girlfriend, Tawney, after decades apart, only to discover that she is now divorced, a single mother, and dating Tygen. Consumed by jealousy and pride, Tygen challenges Mitch to a deal: if Mitch can reform his old band Juggernaut and beat him at the upcoming Battle of the Bands, he will cancel the foreclosure. Determined to save his mother’s home and prove himself to Tawney once more, Mitch and Bart set out to reunite the band. But after years away from music, getting everyone back together is anything but easy…

Behind the Scenes of Gettin’ the Band Back Together
Seven Years in the Making Before Its Broadway Debut
Developed over four years, this musical was originally titled “Garage Band” and premiered on September 24, 2013, at the George Street Playhouse in New Jersey, the hometown of the legendary rock band Bon Jovi. Choosing this venue was a tribute to the state’s rock-and-roll roots.
For the final preview on October 3, tickets were sold at half price, and free tickets were offered to first responders such as police officers and firefighters, generating significant buzz.
The show was later renamed “Gettin’ the Band Back Together” and staged in a Pre-Broadway Workshop, where it received strong reviews but also underwent extensive revisions. After years of fine-tuning, the musical finally made its Broadway debut in July 2018 – seven years after its original conception.

Gettin’ the Band Back Together – Review
From Sawada:
Laughs from start to finish
At first, the cast didn’t look very impressive, but the moment they started singing you could tell they were true Broadway performers.
The story is predictable in a good way, filled with easy-to-follow American humor, so there was no language barrier at all.
If you like classic comedy shows like *Full House*, you’ll definitely enjoy this. Singing, dancing, playing instruments, and keeping the audience engaged – this felt like a true Broadway musical in every sense.
I skipped *Chicago* to see this one, and it was absolutely the right choice. Not once did I feel sleepy. Both acts had me laughing nonstop.
The guitar and vocals were excellent, though I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars only because the bass player looked a little amateurish to me. Totally a personal opinion!

From Kishimoto:
A Warm and Welcoming Show
Living in New York, I wanted to try something new and decided to see this musical. I didn’t read the synopsis or look into it beforehand, so I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I ended up laughing the whole time.
I sat in the center of the orchestra section, so I missed out on the high-fives with the cast, but the way the entire theater joined in the fun made it feel like a true comedy musical.
The characters are ordinary people, which made the whole performance feel very relatable and down-to-earth. That sense of connection really worked.
If you’re just looking to laugh and have a fun Broadway night, I definitely recommend it.
