Mean Girls – Behind the Scenes
From the Iconic Lindsay Lohan Film
The musical is based on the 2004 American film of the same name starring Lindsay Lohan. The story follows a 16-year-old girl who transfers from Africa to an American high school, where she quickly becomes entangled in the unique social hierarchies and intense rivalries of teenage girls. The movie also featured Hollywood stars Amanda Seyfried, who later headlined the film Mamma Mia!, and Rachel McAdams, known for The Notebook. Thanks to its fashion, witty dialogue, and unforgettable one-liners, the film achieved cult status.
Among the most quoted lines are “You can’t sit with us” and “On Wednesdays we wear pink.” These iconic moments are also brought to life on stage, complemented by dazzling costumes where cast members are often dressed head-to-toe in pink.
Five Years in the Making Before Its Broadway Debut
Just like the film, the stage version was written by Tina Fey. This musical marked her Broadway debut, and while it took years to shape into a full production, she embraced the challenge and succeeded in deepening both the characters and the story. For Broadway, she also added brand-new comedic scenes, blending nostalgia with fresh humor.
Although the idea of bringing Mean Girls to Broadway surfaced years earlier, Paramount Pictures, which held the film rights, only granted permission after five years of negotiations. This long-awaited approval finally paved the way for the musical’s debut on the Broadway stage.
The score was composed by Fey’s husband, Jeff Richmond, with lyrics by Nell Benjamin, best known for Legally Blonde. Benjamin infused her own high school experiences into the lyrics, adding authenticity and relatability. Tony Award-winning director Casey Nicholaw, celebrated for his work on Aladdin, Something Rotten!, and The Book of Mormon, joined the team, making it a true dream collaboration.

Mean Girls – Review
Review by Momo no Tennensui:
At first she looked down on the popular group, but once she became part of it, she was swept away in a world of pink. It reminded me that the struggles of adolescence are the same whether in America or elsewhere. Teenage girls in love can be terrifying, and being the one they’re after is tough too! (laughs)

The LED stage design was dazzling!
The use of LED lighting was bold and flashy, which made the stage so exciting. The cast was adorable, and I kept thinking how amazing it must feel to actually perform on this stage. The fast pace kept me entertained the entire time without a single dull moment.

Review by Personal Recommendation:
It felt just like watching High School Musical, which was a thrill for me as a fan! I also ended up buying lots of cute merchandise. The audience was filled with teens, many dressed so lightly it made me cold just watching them. I definitely recommend bringing a blanket if you get chilly easily.

Review by Regina:
Since Lindsay Lohan left such a strong impression in the movie, I found the lead in the musical a bit too ordinary by comparison. She sang beautifully, but honestly, the actress playing Regina stood out even more and felt like the true star of the show.

Review by Saejima:
I was a little nervous since there weren’t many reviews, but I ended up loving it. I’ve always enjoyed high school dramas and films, and this musical had the same fun energy. The portrayal of teenage cliques felt universal, and it was fascinating to watch. Some of the girls were so fierce it was a little intimidating, but that’s part of what made it interesting.
