The Phantom of the Opera – Story
The Plot / Summary of The Phantom of the Opera
On a misty night, a boat carries Christine across the underground lake beneath the opera house, leading her into the Phantom’s hidden lair. Christine, a young chorus girl who had just saved an opera performance as a sudden understudy, becomes the object of the Phantom’s deep obsession. Calling himself the “Angel of Music,” he appears to her night after night, determined to make her his star and have her sing only his music.
Mesmerized by the Phantom, who reminds her of her late father, Christine’s curiosity gets the better of her. She removes his mask, only to reveal his disfigured face. Enraged and humiliated, the Phantom curses her, but Christine also glimpses the loneliness and longing in his eyes.
Soon after, a threatening letter arrives at the opera house. The Phantom demands Christine be cast as the lead in the opera *Il Muto* or disaster will follow. Fearful of upsetting their prima donna, Carlotta, the managers ignore the warning. On opening night, tragedy strikes as the Phantom’s threats turn deadly.
Amid the chaos, Christine’s childhood friend and lover, Raoul, whisks her to the rooftop to protect her. As the two confess their love, the Phantom watches in sorrow, which quickly transforms into fury. Moments later, a massive chandelier crashes down onto the stage, sending the audience into panic.
Six months later, at a lavish New Year’s Eve masquerade, the Phantom suddenly appears in a striking red costume. He brandishes the score of his own opera, *Don Juan Triumphant*, demanding that Christine perform it before vanishing again.
On the premiere night of *Don Juan Triumphant*, the Phantom infiltrates the production, murders the lead actor, and takes his place on stage. In front of the audience, he abducts Christine and carries her into the depths below. Raoul follows in pursuit, but is caught in the Phantom’s trap and ensnared by a noose.
“If you reject me, he will die. Choose now.”
Christine, torn with despair, approaches the Phantom in silence, facing the most heartbreaking choice of her life.

The most moving performance was "Masquerade"! The cast dancing on the stairs and the gorgeous costumes are still burned into my memory. I was moved. It was truly a classic musical.
It doesn't feel old-fashioned, and the tune is pleasant, so it made me feel very elegant. To be honest, I couldn't understand what was being said in the parts with three or four quartets (four people singing different lyrics). My English-speaking friend also said that it was difficult to understand, so if you want to enjoy it to the fullest, I think it's best to read the story beforehand.
I saw this play in Japan a long time ago, but the scale of the stage was completely different from the English version. I was impressed that it was truly authentic. There were many foreigners in the audience, and I felt that this production was a world-class musical. It's much more enjoyable if you know the songs before you go.
When you watch The Phantom of the Opera after seeing other Broadway musicals, you're amazed at its majesty... This is a classic musical. The stage sets and stage changes were amazing. I think it's sad that classic musicals like this are becoming less and less common.
It was like an opera. It felt a little old-fashioned? I saw Aladdin yesterday, but it was completely different. Personally, I think I prefer Aladdin...lol

Behind the Scenes of The Phantom of the Opera
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Masterpiece
First performed on Broadway in 1988, The Phantom of the Opera won seven Tony Awards including Best musical, cementing its place as one of the greatest productions in Broadway history. Based on Gaston Leroux’s novel, the show tells the tragic love story of the Phantom and Christine set beneath the Paris Opera House.
The score was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber, the genius behind global hits like Cats and Evita. His hauntingly beautiful music resonates deeply with audiences and continues to captivate theatergoers worldwide.
The Phantom’s First Premiere Was in London
When The Phantom of the Opera premiered in London in 1986, it shocked the musical world with its scale and beauty. The show has been running ever since at Her Majesty’s Theatre and swept major British theater awards including the Olivier Award.
Two years later, the production arrived on Broadway to enormous anticipation, making headlines with an unprecedented $18 million in advance ticket sales.
The Unexpected Story Behind Its Creation
When Gaston Leroux first published his novel The Phantom of the Opera in 1910, it was popular but considered little more than a sensational story. It inspired several films, but never reached the prestige of classic literature.
That changed when Andrew Lloyd Webber, seeking a romantic story for his next musical, stumbled upon an old edition of Leroux’s novel in a New York bookshop. Instantly inspired, he teamed up with producer Cameron Mackintosh, and together they created what would become one of the most successful musicals in history.
Had Webber not picked up that book, this masterpiece might never have existed. The Phantom’s journey from a forgotten novel to a worldwide phenomenon is nothing short of a miracle. Don’t miss the chance to experience it live in the theater.
Songs and Music from The Phantom of the Opera
The greatest appeal of The Phantom of the Opera lies in its unforgettable music. It perfectly blends the grandeur of opera with the accessibility of Broadway musicals. Composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, also known for hits like Cats, the score is filled with soaring, emotional melodies that move audiences night after night.
Hearing iconic numbers like The Phantom of the Opera and The Music of the Night performed live with a full orchestra is an experience unlike any other, leaving theatergoers exhilarated and deeply touched.
