Guide of an Off Broadway company for solo performance
All For One Theater (AFO) was founded in 2011 by producer Michael Wolk. It specializes in solo performance and has developed, produced, and presented more than 50 one person works since its founding. AFO does not own a permanent venue, so performance locations vary by season and title. The company’s office is in the Broadway district in the same building as the Iridium Jazz Club and near the Winter Garden Theatre.
AFO was created to produce an annual solo performance festival. In 2014, it shifted from a single festival to year round presentations of solo works from the United States and abroad. The following year, AFO focused its mission on presenting and producing solo performance in New York City.
Featured past performers include Tom Hewitt (Chicago, The Lion King), performance artist Deb Margolin, and author Annabelle Gurwitch.
AFO also runs artist development initiatives. The Solo Collective supports mid career solo artists through workshops and conversations, while the two year Artist in Residence program offers training and practice for artists creating solo work.
Solo performance is a play performed by a single artist. On Broadway, solo shows range from autobiographical works and comedy to spoken word, music, and dance. The longest running solo play in Broadway history is Rob Becker’s Defending the Caveman, which ran from 1995 to 1997 for 674 performances. The Drama Desk Awards also include a category recognizing solo performance.
