New York’s leading nonprofit theater Company, producing Broadway and Off-Broadway plays and musicals.
Lincoln Center Theater is a producing organization based at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts that has created dozens of acclaimed plays and musicals since its launch in 1985. It produces work in three venues on the Upper West Side campus.
①Vivian Beaumont Theater
②Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater
③Claire Tow Theater
The company has also been known historically in connection with the Repertory Theater of Lincoln Center and Music Theater of Lincoln Center.
Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts is a landmark cultural campus envisioned by John D. Rockefeller III and planned in the 1950s, with its major halls opening during the 1960s. It brings together concert halls, theaters, schools, and libraries across more than twenty facilities. The site is in the Lincoln Square neighborhood of Manhattan, and today it is one of New York City’s best known destinations for music, dance, opera, and theater.
Guided by Rockefeller’s belief that great art should be accessible to many, the campus opened its principal halls in the 1960s. Its resident organizations include the New York Philharmonic, New York City Ballet, and the Metropolitan Opera. The Beaumont and Newhouse theaters form Lincoln Center Theater’s Broadway and Off-Broadway homes.
In 1985, Lincoln Center established Lincoln Center Theater with former New York City mayor John V. Lindsay as board chair, Gregory Mosher as producing director, and Bernard Gersten as executive producer. From the outset the company focused on high quality productions and audience access through memberships and value priced tickets, aiming to welcome theatergoers of all backgrounds.
Lincoln Center Theater began producing on the Vivian Beaumont stage soon after its formation. The Beaumont, which opened in 1965, has a history that includes repertory seasons in which different productions rotated in the same house. Later, New York Shakespeare Festival presented work there in the 1970s.
The Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater opened in 1967 as an intimate Off-Broadway space beneath the Beaumont. Originally called the Forum, it was renamed in 1973 to honor philanthropist Mitzi E. Newhouse. Since 1985 it has been a home for new plays and innovative work. “Oslo,” which premiered there in 2016, is a play that went on to win the 2017 Tony Award for Best Play.
In 2012, Lincoln Center Theater opened the 112 seat Claire Tow Theater, a purpose built space that includes rehearsal rooms, dressing rooms, offices, and a lobby bar. The building features a landscaped green roof and sun shading louvers, reflecting a focus on sustainability.Beyond producing plays and musicals and selling tickets across its three venues, Lincoln Center Theater offers education initiatives for students and teachers throughout the year.
The High School Program spans an academic year and blends classroom learning with hands on theater practice. Courses include teacher professional development, in class workshops with teaching artists, and end of term talkbacks that bring classes together to reflect on their work.
The Shakespeare Program introduces students to Shakespeare through workshops that explore performance, text, and ensemble practice.
Songwriting in the Schools guides students through the basics of lyric writing and composition. Select pieces are showcased in performances at Lincoln Center Theater, giving participants an authentic page to stage experience.
