History of the Classic Stage Company Theatre

The Classic Stage Company Theatre (CSC) was founded in 1967 by stage director Christopher Martin. Both a theatre and a company, Classic Stage Company specializes in Off Broadway productions and is affectionately known simply as “CSC.”

Martin, already active as a stage director, purchased a 100 seat theatre located inside the Rutgers Presbyterian Church in 1967 to establish Classic Stage Company.

Unlike traditional theatres that focus on long runs of a single title, CSC adopted a repertory theatre model in which its resident troupe presented a variety of plays on alternating nights. Seeking a larger venue, the company moved in 1973 to today’s East Village, where it converted a former carriage house into a 199 seat Off Broadway theatre and reopened as the Classic Stage Company.

CSC’s unique management style

While most theatres operate under an owner who relies on producers and investors for funding, Classic Stage Company has always been run directly by its artistic directors and stage directors.

From 1967 to 1987 CSC was led by founder Christopher Martin; from 1987 to 1992 by stage director Carey Perloff; from 1992 to 1998 by film director David Esbjornson; and from 1998 to 2003 by theatre director Barry Edelstein.

Broadway debut with Venus in Fur

Venus in Fur
During the tenure of artistic director Brian Kulick (2003 – 2016), CSC premiered the Off Broadway production of Venus in Fur in 2010. The following year it transferred to Broadway, marking CSC’s Broadway debut. The production went on to earn a Tony Award nomination for Best Play and won the Tony for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play. This was the first time a CSC production moved to Broadway and the first time the theatre earned a Tony Award.

Over his 13 year leadership, CSC also garnered top Off Broadway honors including the Obie Award and the Drama Desk Award.
