History of The Theater at Madison Square Garden
Operated by MSG, a leader in sports and entertainment
The Theater at Madison Square Garden is one of the venues located inside Madison Square Garden, New York City’s largest arena complex. It was built in 1968 as part of the facilities owned and managed by the Madison Square Garden Entertainment Corp. (commonly known as MSG), a major event organization specializing in live sports and entertainment.
With flexible seating for between 2,000 and 5,600 people, the venue is used for Broadway-style musicals, theatrical productions, concerts, boxing, wrestling, circuses, graduation ceremonies, and other large-scale events.
MSG operates two main divisions: “MSG Sports,” which oversees professional teams such as the New York Knicks (NBA) and the New York Rangers (NHL), and “MSG Entertainment,” which manages live events and venues.
In addition to The Theater at Madison Square Garden, MSG Entertainment also operates the main arena inside the complex, the 20,000-seat Madison Square Garden Arena, one of the world’s most famous venues for concerts and live events.
A venue with many name changes
The theater now known as The Theater at Madison Square Garden opened on February 14, 1968, under the name Felt Forum, in honor of then-president Irving Mitchell Felt.
In the early 1990s, following acquisition by Paramount Communications, the theater was renovated and renamed the Paramount Theater in 1991.
Seven years later in 1997, ownership returned to MSG and the venue operated once again as The Theater at Madison Square Garden until 2007.
In 2007, Washington Mutual Inc., then the nation’s largest savings and loan association, acquired the naming rights and rebranded the venue as the WaMu Theater.
During this time, the theater hosted major productions, including the Cirque du Soleil holiday show Wintuk in 2008. After Washington Mutual’s bankruptcy that same year, the theater’s name reverted to The Theater at Madison Square Garden. In 2018, the venue was renamed again under a sponsorship agreement and is currently known as the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden.
