History of the Vineyard Theatre

An Off-Broadway theater near Union Square

The Vineyard Theatre was established in 1981 as a 132-seat Off-Broadway theater by the nonprofit organization “Vineyard Theatre and Workshop Center Inc.” It became widely known when its production of Avenue Q won the Tony Award for Best Musical at the 58th Annual Tony Awards in 2004.

Most Broadway theaters are concentrated in the designated area near Times Square, known as the Theater District. However, the Vineyard Theatre is located outside of Times Square, near Union Square in Lower Manhattan.

Unlike many Broadway houses that run one show for an extended period, the Vineyard Theatre does not focus on long-running productions. Instead, its motto is to introduce new works every season, presenting multiple productions within a single year.

From Off-Broadway to Broadway

The Vineyard Theatre is best known for productions such as Avenue Q and [title of show]. Both began as Off-Broadway shows before becoming major hits that transferred to Broadway.

Avenue Q premiered Off-Broadway in 2003 and moved to Broadway the following year, 2004. At that year’s Tony Awards, it won Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Original Score, cementing its status as a smash hit.

Although its Broadway run has ended, the show returned Off-Broadway and played at New World Stages (Stage 3) from October 9, 2009, until May 26, 2019.
