Manhattan Theatre Club – Producer of Broadway and Off-Broadway plays
Manhattan Theatre Club (MTC) was founded in 1970 and has grown into one of New York’s leading nonprofit producers of new plays and modern classics. The company develops and produces work on and Off-Broadway, operating the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on Broadway and two intimate stages at New York City Center (Stage I and Stage II).
In its early years MTC presented work without a permanent home, renting cabaret and small theater spaces while focusing on strong new writing. In 1973, with support from The Shubert Organization, MTC expanded its producing of plays and Off-Broadway works on a regular season schedule. By the mid-1980s the company established a base at New York City Center, opening Stage I (approximately 299 seats) and Stage II (approximately 150 seats), where it continues to develop and premiere new plays.
New York City Center opened in 1943 as Manhattan’s first performing arts center with a mission to make music, theater, and dance widely accessible.
The venue features a 2,257-seat Mainstage along with Stage I and Stage II. City Center also presents the annual Fall for Dance Festival and the acclaimed Encores! series, which revives notable musical theater titles. After significant renovations in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, City Center remains a hub for leading companies and visiting productions, with MTC premiering many new works in its two resident spaces.
Seeking a dedicated Broadway home, MTC undertook the restoration of the historic Biltmore Theatre, which had been damaged by arson in the late 1980s. With public-private support, the project included a comprehensive renovation—preserving the landmarked proscenium details and balcony while adding modern amenities—and the theater reopened in 2003 with approximately 650 seats. In 2008, it was renamed the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre in honor of the esteemed Broadway press agent.
MTC develops and produces new plays and contemporary revivals, operates one Broadway theater and two stages at New York City Center, and hosts special events that support its artistic and education programs.
MTC’s Spring Gala brings together celebrated performers from award-winning stage and screen productions for an evening of performances benefiting the company’s new-work and education initiatives. Tickets and tables are available through MTC’s official site.
MTC has offered curated Cultural Tours for supporters, featuring performances, museum visits, and behind-the-scenes experiences in major theater cities. Details and availability are announced on the organization’s website.
