History of St. Ann’s Warehouse
Founded to revitalize the Brooklyn Heights community
St. Ann’s Warehouse was founded in 1980 inside the historic St. Ann & the Holy Trinity Church in Brooklyn Heights as a venue for classical music and performance.
It was not established by a commercial theater company but rather by the church itself, which repurposed part of its space to support the revitalization of the Brooklyn Heights neighborhood. At that time, it was known as “Arts at St. Ann’s.”
In 2000, the organization relocated to the Dumbo district and expanded its programming beyond classical music to include live concerts, theater, fashion shows, and multidisciplinary events. Today, it is affectionately known as “SAW.”
From industrial warehouse to a cutting-edge cultural hub
In 2000, Arts at St. Ann’s moved from Brooklyn Heights to the Dumbo waterfront under the Brooklyn Bridge and adopted the name “St. Ann’s Warehouse.”
The Dumbo area, once filled with factories and warehouses in the late 19th century, began transforming in the 1990s as young artists sought more affordable space than Manhattan could offer. St. Ann’s seized this opportunity, converting former industrial sites into flexible performance spaces.
In 2015, the company moved into its permanent home inside the renovated Tobacco Warehouse, a Civil War-era brick structure located in Brooklyn Bridge Park. The venue was redesigned into a flexible theater space that can accommodate approximately 300 to 700 seats depending on configuration.
Over the years, St. Ann’s Warehouse has hosted groundbreaking artists such as David Bowie, Lou Reed, and Joe Strummer, as well as international theater productions. Today, it continues to serve as one of New York’s most innovative cultural destinations, presenting theater, music, fashion shows, and special events.
About St. Ann & the Holy Trinity Church
A Gothic Revival landmark with stunning design
The founding home of Arts at St. Ann’s was the St. Ann & the Holy Trinity Church, built in 1847 in Brooklyn Heights. Designed in the Gothic Revival style, it is one of New York’s historic landmarks.
The church is notable for its stained-glass windows by William Jay Bolton, the first artist in America to design and manufacture stained glass. In addition to worship services, the church became known for hosting performances ranging from choral works and organ recitals to early productions like a puppet opera version of “The Barber of Seville.”
By the late 1980s, the space was also used for jazz concerts and festivals, featuring artists such as Aaron Neville and the Bulgarian State Radio Choir.
