History of the McKittrick Hotel

A luxury hotel that closed before opening

The McKittrick Hotel at the time of its construction

The McKittrick Hotel was completed in 1939 in Chelsea as one of the most glamorous and luxurious hotels in New York. It was built to attract prominent businessmen and wealthy clientele, and drew considerable attention from the media at the time.

However, in 1939, the German invasion of Poland triggered the start of World War II. With the economic shock and a sharp decline in stock values, the recovering U.S. economy was once again shaken. The McKittrick Hotel was hit hard with massive reservation cancellations and financial losses. Six weeks before its scheduled opening, the hotel was forced to close permanently, leaving debts of over one million dollars. The McKittrick never officially opened as a hotel.

Decades of abandonment

After closing, the McKittrick Hotel remained abandoned for decades. Attempts to reopen in the 1950s never materialized, and the property briefly served as office space in the 1960s and 1970s. By the late 1970s, it once again fell into disuse and disappeared from public life, standing as an empty relic in Chelsea for years.

Revival as the venue for Sleep No More

After decades of abandonment, the McKittrick Hotel was transformed in 2011 into the home of the groundbreaking immersive production Sleep No More. Based on Shakespeare’s Macbeth, the show invited audiences to wander through over 100 rooms across multiple floors, experiencing scenes of love, betrayal, and murder up close. Guests were required to wear masks, heightening the mysterious, otherworldly atmosphere.

For more than a decade, Sleep No More became one of New York’s most iconic Off-Broadway experiences, blending theater, dance, and installation art in an abandoned-hotel setting unlike anything else in the city.

However, after captivating audiences since 2011, Sleep No More closed its doors in January 2024, bringing an end to its legendary run at the McKittrick Hotel.

Current use of the McKittrick Hotel

Following the closure of Sleep No More, the McKittrick Hotel remains in Chelsea as a distinctive venue known for its bars, rooftop garden restaurant, and special events. While the immersive show that defined the space for over a decade has ended, the McKittrick continues to operate as a nightlife and cultural destination, with spaces such as the rooftop bar Gallow Green and the Manderley Bar still welcoming guests.
